Knud Rasmussens Højskole: Solar heat on Greenland

In Sisimiut, located at the west coast of the island, ExoTech together with Denmark’s university of technology (DTU) and a local contractor have completed two solar heating projects.

It is Knut Rasmussens Højskole and another building that now gets it’s heating from the very weather withstanding evacuated tube collectors.

The weather on Greenland is demanding and the solar collectors are really put to the test. They have to withstand temperatures down to 60 degrees Celsius below zero, large amounts of snow and winds that can reach 50 m/s.

The highly efficient evacuated pipe collectors covers about 35-40 % of the heating requirements. There is a large shortage of alternative energy sources on the island. Most of the inhabitants get their heat from oil.
